Into Ree Morton is a showcase for Ree's working methods, opening a window to her mind, by presenting archival materials and documents of her life. For almost every work in this exhibition our curatorial team have sourced photos and notes from her archive. Ree took many photos, both of her studio and her exhibitions. During her travels through the USA she photographed objects that inspired her, such as gravestones or front gardens that had been individually decorated by their owners. In her notebooks (more than 35 in total!) she wrote down her thoughts, copied quotes and made sketches for her work. These collected photos and drawings show how playfully and undogmatically Ree dealt with her work, and how she adapted works of art to their respective spatial conditions. In one notebook entry she writes: “I want to have objects and paintings that can stand on their own without having to be installed in a certain way, but I am also constantly interested in the overall perception of the space when the work is there.” The photos that have been selected show that Ree’s aforementioned wish need not be a contradiction in terms: You can see how she responds to spaces and environments with her work, and how she always manages to keep her objects and paintings alive, into new situations.
